The Mayor’s Health Line is brining awareness to March being National Colon Cancer Awareness Month. Recently, scientists have learned more about the biological and environmental impacts on cancer. Here are some tips from the Susan Cohan Kasdas Colon Cancer Foundation about how healthy eating can help decrease your risk of colon cancer

  •  You can lower your overall cancer risk by being active and eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables.
  •  Supplemental calcium and folic acid (folate) may also decrease the risk of colon cancer.
  •  A daily aspirin might decrease the number of polyps in patients at high risk for colon polyps (abnormal growths), which are a precursor to colon cancer.

High consumption of red and processed meat over a long period of time is associated with an increased risk for some colon cancers.
