Asian Long-Horned Beetle: Be on the Lookout

Posted on August 30, 2011

Please be on the lookout for the Asian Long-Horned Beetle (ALB), a pest that is extremely threatening to trees.  ALB bores into host trees where it feeds on its nutrients, which kills the tree.

In July 2010, ALB was discovered in Jamaica Plain.  The infected trees were removed and destroyed.  Over 52,000 trees have been surveyed as of May 2011.  No new infestations were found.

ALB has these characteristics:

*1 to 1.5 inches not including its antennae which is equally long, and in some cases, longer.

*Black with irregular white spots
