Infants Born with Drug Addictions

Posted on July 29, 2011

The White House Office on Drug Control Policy believes prescription drug abuse is America’s fastest growing drug problem. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has released a new report explaining the unfortunate result of of pregnant women consuming prescription drugs. State health records show that 635 Florida babies were born addicted to prescription drugs in 2010. Babies are born with an addition to medicine that their mothers abused during their pregnancy. The babies go through withdrawal symptoms and show signs of irritability, perspiration, rapid breathing, and even seizures. The babies must be weaned off prescription drugs, or they will suffer while getting clean.

It is imperative that mothers wean themselves off this addition, especially if pregnant as she should want to give her child the healthiest possible start to life. Some mothers are scared to admit they have a drug dependency problem, but I urge them to seek help and support.
