Healthy Eating Tips for the Holidays

Posted on December 8, 2010

The holidays are just around the corner, and many people will soon be sharing holiday feasts with their families and friends. To help keep your weight in check, here are some tips on eating healthy from the Weight-control Information Network. This is a service of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

  • Eat foods that are high in fiber, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • Don’t skip meals.
  • Eat foods fortified with vitamin B12. As you age, B12 gets more difficult to absorb, so it’s important to make sure you get enough of it. Some cereals, for example, are fortified with B12.
  • Have three servings a day of dairy products that are fortified with vitamin D.
  • If you eat chicken, remove the skin. This lowers the amount of fat and calories.
