April is Foot Health Awareness Month

With spring upon us, here are some tips on how to keep your feet healthy in flip-flops from the American Podiatric Medical Association.

  1. Make sure that the flip-flops fit properly and that your foot is not hanging off the edge.
  2. Gently bend the flip-flop from end to end to see if it bends at the ball of the foot. It should never fold in the center, but instead closer to your toe.
  3. Buy flip-flops made of high quality materials to minimize irritation and blisters.
  4. If your flip-flops are severely worn out, do not continue to wear them.
  5. Wear more supportive shoes that are not flip-flops when walking long distances.
  6. Do not exercise in flip-flops. It can lead to twisting or even breaking of the ankle or foot.
  7. Apply lotion or vaseline to your feet. Moisture will cut down on blisters due to the friction caused from walking.
