The Mayor’s Health Line is celebrating National Public Health Week this week!

Strong, healthy communities are dependent upon strong public health systems across America, and that begins with YOU. If every one of us took just a few small steps towards a healthier lifestyle, the next generation could quite possibly be the healthiest in the world.

Spread the Word, Inspire Others

NPHW kicks off with the launch of a new and exciting video titled A Healthier America. Building on the success of last year’s Generation Public Health video, this year’s video shows how small changes can lead to major improvements in public health and create healthier communities nationwide. Check them out at www.generationpublichealth.org, on YouTube and on Facebook, and share them with your friends, family and colleagues.  Help us reach our goal of 100,000 views by the end of this week!

The NPHW 2010 A Healthy America survey.

APHA commissioned a national public opinion survey to better understand how to create healthier communities. Conducted in anticipation of NPHW, the survey uncovered what Americans believe constitutes a healthier America, and measured how Americans characterize their personal health and their ability to make a personal or community difference. Key findings include:

  • 47 percent of Americans want to be an inspiration for healthy living for their children;
  • 51 percent of Americans have helped friends or family make healthy lifestyle changes in the past 6 months; and
  • While 64 percent of Americans have already made healthy changes to their lifestyle, an additional 21 percent are thinking about making healthy changes.

Take Action

Urge Congress to Support Public Health Funding

Past budget cuts to CDC, HRSA, and other public health service agencies, along with new challenges and responsibilities, have caused these critically important agencies to do more with less and to struggle to provide basic public health services. In the coming months, the House and Senate Appropriations Committees will be deciding how to complete the fiscal year 2011 appropriations bills, which will provide the level of public health funding for the upcoming fiscal year.

Please send a letter to your Senators and Representative TODAY voicing your support for the highest possible funding increase for essential public health service agencies!

How You Can Create a Healthier America

We can reach our goal if we start small, think big. If every one of us commits to promoting good health in our communities, we can create a ripple effect from coast to coast.

Start Small…

  • Choose fruits and vegetables instead of sugary sweets at the grocery store.
  • Quit smoking or using other tobacco products.
  • Plant a fruit tree in your neighborhood or backyard.

Think big…

  • Create clean and safe parks in your neighborhood with ball courts and exercise trails.

Invite local policy-makers and other experts to a community roundtable to discuss the role of public health in our nation’s health reform discussions.
