Healthy Aging Tips

The Los Angeles Times has some tips for staying healthy as you age. Dr. Cheryl Phillips, a physician in San Francisco and president of the American Geriatrics Society, offers many tips on how to stay healthy while aging. In addition to staying active, Dr. Phillips suggests.

  1. Get vaccinated: get a flu shot every year and a pneumonia vaccine after you turn 65. She also recommends the shingles vaccine after you turn 60 and a tetanus booster every 10 years.
  2. Talk to your doctors about preventing falls
  3. Make sure your doctor is aware of all the medications you take, including over the counter medications and vitamins.
  4. Have your hearing, vision and blood pressure checked every year.
  5. Have periodic screenings for colon cancer and other diseases.
  6. Make sure you control illnesses that you already have such as diabetes and heart disease.
  7. Start developing good health habits, such as eating more fruits and vegetables and exercising more frequently.
