Take care of your heart: Celebrate the American Hearth Month!

Did you know that February is American Heart Month? The Mayor’s Health Line would like to share some tips from the American Heart Association for a healthy diet and lifestyle that could help you fight cardiovascular disease.

1) Calories in = Calories out

  • Understand how many calories your body needs.
  • Don’t eat more calories than you know you can burn in a day!
  • Try to get in at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. If you can’t do do at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, break them up into 10 minute sessions throughout the day, that’s easy and simple enough! Theres no excuse!

2) You are what you eat – Know your nutrition!

  • For all the calories you are consuming, make sure you are eating the right foods that provides all the nutrients your body needs
  • Eat nutrient-rich, and calorie-low foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains
  • Have fun with your nutritious and yummy food by dabbling around with some heart-healthy recipes
  • Limit the amount of low-nutrient yet high-calorie food you consume
  • Limit how much trans-fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium you consume
  • Get in the habit of reading nutrition fact labels on your foods carefully and healthily

3) STOP smoking!
