A common New Years’ resolution is to eat more healthful foods. Now that the New Year is here, you may have made the resolution to “Eat Healthier”. In doing so, you may want to consider food preparation, since you may have opted to eat out less or eat more organic items. The American Dietetic Association has some tips about how to protect yourself and your loved ones from food borne illnesses:

  • Store food properly;
  • Make sure to use sealed containers;
  • Refrigerate or freeze food items that need to be kept cold;
  • Prepare food with clean hands;
  • Use a thermometer to check the temperature of cooked food and make sure it reaches the correct temperature;
  • Stay away from foods that are more likely to carry harmful bacteria;
  • Thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables;
  • Refrigerate leftovers in a timely manner;
  • When preparing foods make sure to keep raw foods separate from ready to eat foods;
  • Wash all food preparation materials thoroughly.
