Layering up by wearing hats, scarves and gloves might be on your mind this winter season, but despite the cold temperatures, the sun is still out, and it is important to take steps to protect yourself from sun damage.

Even though the weather may be chilly in the Boston area, the sun is still out and you should take precautions to protect yourself from sun damage. Wearing protective clothing and sunscreen are just as important in the winter weather as the rest of the year. Here are some tips from the Skin Cancer Foundation about how to protect your skin during these cold winter months.

  • Sunscreen can treat dry skin and protect against harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.
  • Wear a hat to shade your face, head and neck.
  • Remember that the sun can get through the clouds. Just because it is cloudy out does not mean that you should forgo sunscreen.
  • If using a self-tanning lotion, you should apply sunscreen as well since self-tanning products do not protect you from UV radiation.
