There’s a smarter way to stay fit without being financially sucker-punched by your gym every month: Pay per visit. “Gym users on monthly plans pay 70 percent more than those on pay-as-you-go plans based on usage,” says Stefano DellaVigna, Ph.D., an associate professor of economics at the University of California at Berkeley, who studied 7,752 gym members over 3 years.

Should you switch plans?

  • A. Write down how much you currently pay each month.
  • B. Find out how much your gym charges for a single visit.
  • C. Estimate the number of days you plan to visit the gym next month (in a perfect world, that is).

IF: A / (C/2) > B,

THEN: Use a pay-as-you-go plan. If not, consider a flat-rate annual plan.
