Health Tips for the Holidays

The holidays are a special time for many families. People travel from near and far to celebrate with loved ones. Whether you are lighting the holiday candles or putting up decorations, it is always important to keep safety in mind. Here are some tips from about how to stay safe during the holidays.

  • Never leave lit candles alone.
  • Do not leave candles too close to trees or other holiday decorations.
  • Be careful when placing candles in the windows that they are not too close to any curtains or shades.
  • Be careful hanging decorations, if you must hang something in a high location that requires a ladder, make sure you have someone around to spot you.
  • If there are small children joining you for your holiday celebration, be careful about what types of decorations you use, as small items could be a choking hazard.
  • Be cautious of where you put wires and make sure they are not in a place where people could trip over them.
  • If you are buying an artificial tree, look for the label “Fire Resistant”. This doesn’t mean it can’t catch fire, but it won’t catch fire as easily. If it does catch fire, the flames can usually be extinguished faster than if it were a normal tree.
  • If you are using outdoor lights, make sure they are certified for outdoor use.
  • Be careful with artificial snow sprays as they could cause lung irritation. Make sure to read the directions thoroughly.
